Commentary on Technology
- [UPDATED 9/25/02] Motorola (MOT) has come up with a single-chip GPS
(Global Positioning System) solution that will be usable for future cell
phones, handheld computers, and notebook computers. This is a significant
leap forward since it is a feature that venders will design into their
products so that every user has one without needing a bulky add-on or bulky
antenna. The new chip will be available in limited quantities to product
designers in November, with the expectation that products may begin using the
new chip towards the end of 2003.
- [UPDATED 9/25/02] I read that Sony (SNE) is working on a 10
mega-pixel camera that George Lucas hopes to use for the next Star Wars film.
My dream is for “surrogate travel” where we have hi-res 3-D remote cameras and
display screens (and audio) so that we can fully experience the sights and
sounds of remote locations. I think this could happen within a couple of
years.
